Our doctors are all local medical graduates and have completed specialist ophthalmology training in Australia with further training in the UK, USA and Canada. Each has a special area of interest that their practice focuses on.
Our Doctors


Dr Shish Lal specialises in cataract surgery and the management of macular degeneration. He graduated from the University of Sydney and completed his training in Ophthalmology at Sydney Eye Hospital in 1998. He then undertook further training in retinal diseases at St Thomas’s Hospital, London.
Dr Lal is a visiting medical officer at Sydney Adventist Hospital. He is a member of both the Australian and American Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and an executive member of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists.
Dr Ilesh Patel specialises in glaucoma and cataract surgery. He graduated from medical school at the University of New South Wales. He undertook ophthalmology training in Adelaide at Royal Adelaide Hospital/Flinders Medical Centre. He completed a Masters in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, USA focussing on epidemiology and preventative ophthalmology. His research at Johns Hopkins focussed on blindness prevention in rural Africa and Nepal. He has fellowships from the Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins Hospital, USA and Royal Manchester Eye Hospital, UK. Dr Patel is an expert in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma.
Dr Patel has appointments at SAN Day Surgery and Chatswood Private Hospital. He is on the expert advisory committee of Glaucoma Australia.
Dr John Dalton specialises in Glaucoma and Medical Ophthalmology. He attained his medical degree from Sydney University. Following graduation, he was a resident at St Vincent’s Hospital, Darlinghurst for two years and then became the ophthalmic registrar at that hospital. He then moved to the Sydney Eye Hospital where he completed his training.
Dr Dalton holds a Diploma in Ophthalmology from Sydney University and is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He is also a member of the Australian Medical Association and the Kuringai District Medical Association, where he was recently a guest lecturer at their annual congress.
Dr Dalton has been in private practice at Hornsby for over thirty years. During this time he has served as the Chairman of the ophthalmic section of both the Hornsby and Kuringai Hospital and the Sydney Adventist Hospital. He has also served as Chairman of the Medical Staff Council at the SAN Day Surgery Centre. Dr Dalton performed one of the first cataract operations at the SAN Day Surgery Centre.
Dr Dalton brings with him a wealth of experience in the field of Ophthalmology and has a particular interest in the long term management of glaucoma.

Dr Nikhil Kumar specialises in cataract and refractive surgery, cornea transplantation and general ophthalmology. Dr Kumar graduated in medicine from the University of Newcastle and completed a Masters in Public Health from the University of New South Wales. He completed his Ophthalmology fellowship training at the Sydney Eye Hospital and pursued further fellowship training in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the University of Toronto.
He is a clinical lecturer at the Australian School of Advanced Medicine, Macquarie University and at Sydney University. He has specific interest in the refractive outcomes of cataract surgery, laser vision correction, the management of keratoconus and corneal transplantation.
